An Olympic Comparison

I love the Olympics. I love seeing my country whoop other countries. I love seeing the underdog come through with a clutch victory even if for bronze. I love seeing other countries fall flat on their faces shortly after trash talking (see http://biohazard-blog.blogspot.com/2008/08/french-smack-down.html.)

I've had a hard time with this Olympics however because of the host country. We all know of the abuses in a communist or totalitarian system, but why do we not see them? Why does it seem that they are putting on a great show and all of the Chinese seem courteous?

Then my history came back to me. The 1936 Olympics were held in Berlin. For those of you who didn't make the connection that means Nazi Germany. The main purpose of the 1936 games was to show the world how wonderful Germany and Germans in general were. Doesn't this sound like the Beijing Olympics? The Chinese are using the games as a sort of cover up (Even though they still can't cover up the smog :)

Should the Olympics be used a tool of politics? The sad reality is that many countries it is. They are so focused on winning and making their country look better that they forget that it is just games. They (The Chinese) are even willing to cheat just to win.

I think the Olympics should not be for politics.

But competition is a major part of politics.

The one thing I noticed is the liberal media is wacked.... The US is suppose to be so hated by the other countries, but China sure did give us a big applause when our team entered the stadium.
